Cowl Challenge 5

This cowl was created with worsted weight yarn but can be crocheted with any weight or type of yarn. A great unisex pattern. Easy row repeat with a fun texture. The width & length of the cowl will change with the different weights of yarn. Use as many colors as you have on hand.

MATERIALS

  • Bernat Premium (100% Acrylic, 360 yards / 329 meters, 7 oz / 198 g) 250 - 325 yds

  • Other Yarn Options: Caron One Pound, Red Heart With Love, Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Lion Brand Heartland, Red Heart Roll with It, Red Heart Super Saver, Caron Big Cakes, most #4 weight yarns.

HOOKS & SUPPLIES

  • Hook US H8 / 5.00 mm

  • Scissors

  • Yarn Needle

  • Measuring Tape

  • Stitch Marker (Optional)

GAUGE

  • 14 dc stitches = 4”, first 10 rows = 4”

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS

  • One Size: 26” x 9.25”

PATTERN KEY (US Terms)

  • altch2 = alternate chain 2

  • ch = chain

  • dc = double crochet

  • fptr = front post treble crochet

  • fsc = foundation single crochet

  • sc = single crochet

  • slst = slip stitch

  • sp(s) = space(s)

  • tr = treble crochet

EXPERIENCE LEVEL

  • Easy

PATTERN NOTES

  • * * - Repeat instructions between the asterisks.

  • Working in the round, join with a slip stitch at the end of each round.

  • The altch2 is the first double crochet in the round.

  • The chain 1 at the beginning of the round does not count as stitches.

  • Carry the yarn on the inside of the cowl.

 

INSTRUCTIONS


COLOR A

Round 1: fsc 87 (or any multiple of 11 + 10), join as per video. (88 sts)

Optional Round 1: ch 88 (or any multiple of 11), join without twisting the chain, ch 1, sc in the first st and each st around. Join. (88 sts)


Round 2: ch 1, sc in each st around. Join. (88 sts)


COLOR B

Round 3: altch2, dc in the next 2 sts, skip 2 sts, tr in the next 2 sts, working behind the last 2 sts, tr in the next 2 sts, skip 2 sts, tr in the next 2 sts, working behind the last 2 sts, tr in the 2 skipped sts, * dc in the next 3 sts, skip 2 sts, tr in the next 2 sts, working behind the last 2 sts, tr in the 2 skipped sts, skip 2 sts, tr in the next 2 sts, working behind the last 2 sts, tr in the next 2 sts * around. Join.


Round 4: altch2, dc in the next 2 sts, skip 2 sts, tr in the next 2 sts, fptr around the 2 skipped sts, skip 2 sts, tr in the next 2 sts, fptr around the 2 skipped sts, * dc in the next 3 sts, skip 2 sts, tr in the next 2 sts, fptr around the 2 skipped sts, skip 2 sts, tr in the next 2 sts, fptr around the 2 skipped sts * around. Join.


COLOR A

Rounds 5 & 6: ch 1, sc in each st around. Join.


COLOR B

Repeat Rounds 3 - 6 until desired width.


Fasten off, weave in ends.
