Scarf Challenge 4

If you use this FREE pattern, the challenge is to create at least 1 scarf or cowl that you donate to the charity of your choice.

MATERIALS

  • Lion Brand Heartland (100% Acrylic, 251 yards / 230 meters, 5 oz / 142 g) Cowl: 2 Skeins, Scarf: 2 Skeins

  • Other Yarn Options: Caron One Pound, Red Heart With Love, Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice, Bernat Premium, Red Heart Roll with It, Red Heart Super Saver, Caron Big Cakes, most #4 weight yarns.


HOOKS & SUPPLIES

  • Hook US I9 / 5.5 mm

  • Scissors

  • Yarn Needle

  • Measuring Tape

  • Stitch Marker (Optional)

GAUGE

  • N/A


SIZES

  • Cowl: 10” x 25”

  • Scarf: 5.75” x 70”


PATTERN KEY (US Terms)

  • altch2 = alternate chain 2

  • ch = chain

  • dc = double crochet

  • fsc = foundation single crochet

  • fpdc = front post double crochet

  • sc = single crochet

  • slst = slip stitch

  • st = stitch

  • sts = stitches

EXPERIENCE LEVEL

  • Easy


NOTES

  • * * - Repeat instructions between the asterisks as many times as instructed.

  • SCARF: Turn at the end of each row. Fasten off at each color change.

  • COWL: Join with a slst at the end of each round. Carry the yarn on the inside of the cowl for the color changes.

  • Ch sps do not count as sts.

  • The ch 1 at the beginning of the row/round does not count as a st.

INSTRUCTIONS for the Scarf


COLOR A


Row 1: fsc 248 (or any multiple of 7 + 3) (248 sts)

Optional Row 1: ch 249 (or any multiple of 7 + 4), sc in the first ch and each ch across. (248 sts)


Row 2: altch2, dc in the next 3 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts, * dc in the next 5 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts * across until 4 sts remain, dc in the last 4 sts.


Row 3: altch2, dc in the next st, skip 2 sts, FAN in the next ch sp, skip 2 sts, * fpdc around next st, skip 2 sts, FAN in the next ch sp, skip 2 sts * across until 2 sts remain, dc in the last 2 sts.


Row 4: altch2, dc in the next 3 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts, * dc in the next 5 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts * across until 4 sts remain, dc in the last 4 sts.


COLOR B


Row 5: altch2, dc in the next st, skip 2 sts, FAN in the next ch sp, skip 2 sts, * fpdc around the next st, skip 2 sts, FAN in the next ch sp, skip 2 sts * across until 2 sts remain, dc in the last 2 sts.


Row 6: altch2, dc in the next 3 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts, * dc in the next 5 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts * across until 4 sts remain, dc in the last 4 sts.


Row 7: Repeat Row 5.


COLOR A


Rows 8 - 10: Repeat Rows 2 - 4.


Row 11: ch 1, sc in the first 4 sts, 2 sc in the next ch sp, * sc in the next 5 sts, 2 sc in the next ch sp * across until 4 sts remain, sc in the last 4 sts.


Fasten off, weave ends.

INSTRUCTIONS for the Cowl


COLOR A


Round 1: fsc 89 (or any multiple of 6 + 5), join as per video (90 sts)

Optional Round 1: ch 90, being careful not to twist the chain, join ends with a slst, ch 1, sc in the first ch and each ch around.


Round 2: ch 1, sc in the first st and each st around.


Round 3: ch 1, altch2 in the first st, dc in the next 2 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts, * dc in the next 5 sts, ch 2, skip 2 sts * around until 2 sts remain, dc in the last 2 sts.


COLOR B


Round 4: ch 1, altch2 in the first st, skip 2 sts, FAN in the next ch sp, skip 2 sts, * fpdc around the next st, skip 2 sts, FAN in the next ch sp * around.


COLOR A


Rounds 5 - 18: Repeat Rounds 3 & 4, changing colors every round.


COLOR A


Round 19: Repeat Round 3.


Round 20: ch 1, sc in the first 3 sts, 2 sc in the next ch sp, * sc in the next 5 sts, 2 sc in the next ch sp * around until 2 sts remain, sc in the last 2 sts.


Round 21: ch 1, sc in the first st and each st around.


Fasten off, weave ends.
