Fireweed Co.

Don't you love finding new yarn companies? It's even better if they are Canadian! lol Maybe I'm a bit biased.

I had the pleasure of doing a collaboration with Fireweed Fibre Co from Winnipeg Manitoba. This was even more fun for me since we used to live in Manitoba and our oldest still lives in Winnipeg.

They sent me 2 skeins of the Wood Lily Dk. The hardest part for me was picking a color! My "go-to" colors are usually purples and teals/aquas. When designing a pattern lighter colors usually show the stitch definition better than darker colors. Plus when I'm working with beautiful hand dyed yarn I also want to show off the yarn. After a lot of back and forth on the colors I decided on the Tidal Waters. (85% SW merino | 15% donegal nep; 4-ply yarn | 212m / 100g)

What is donegal? "Donegal Nap is a fancy name for polyamide which is just a type of nylon that’s incredibly soft and doesn’t take dye which is what gives it that speckled appearance."

It's even prettier in person! It's a beautiful pale-ish green with flecks of beige, brown & black. The label says it's dk weight, and for me it's pretty close, a bit thinner than the dk I'm used too. One thing I've noticed about hand dyed yarn is that they are labelled differently than the "big company" yarns. Once you realize this it's not as much of a surprise when you get the yarn.

The yarn crochet's beautifully. It's very soft, no splitting or snagging. Even after all of my unravelling while designing the beanie it still looked perfect. I used my new favorite 4.5 mm & 5 mm crochet hooks: the WeCrochet Dots Crochet Hook.

I also created matching fingerless gloves, and had enough yarn to make the ear warmer as well. The stitches are fun, and because it's dk weight yarn the set is perfect for Canadian springs/falls, or those cooler days in Texas in the winter :) I happened to be in Texas when I received the yarn and designed the patterns!

The yarn would make a beautiful cowl, scarf or even a shawl.

As always - I need to know a bit about the people/company behind the beautiful yarn, and I'm sure you would like to know a bit more as well.

What are your names & where you are located?

We are Erin and Trystan & are located in Winnipeg, Manitoba Canada.

What made you decide to dye yarn?

I’ve been knitting since I was very young, a skill I learned from my Finnish grandmother. I started to dye my own yarn when I was unable to find the bright and bold colours that I’m into and figured I’d give it a try making them myself.

What inspires you when choosing colors and/or color combinations.

I definitely get inspired by nature and things in my life that I enjoy. But a lot of the time I’m just dying colours that I personally love.

Do you have a favorite yarn base you like to work with?

I love them all lol. But lately I’ve been really enjoying working with Tweed. I like seeing how the speckles interact with all the different colours and how it even turns solids into something a bit more interesting.

Do you knit or crochet?

I’ve always been a knitter, but truly appreciate crochet.
