Meet the Designer: Squibberly Rose

I first came across Squibberly Rose on FB when I saw a post for a pattern for a Christmas Gonk? A what now? lol It's such a fun and beautiful pattern.

Selina has so many stunning animal patterns. I know you are going to fall in love with at least one if not more. I looked through her shop many times trying to decide which would be my favorite. It's either the highland cow, or the sheep, I still can't decide! If you manage to pick a favorite - I would love to know which pattern it is :)

As usual, the photos link to the pattern. Please follow Selina where you can and give her patterns some love by adding them to your favorites :)

All of her links are at the bottom of the feature.

What is your name, business name & where do you live?

I’m Selina Page of SquibberlyRose, and I live in Bristol in the UK.

When/How did you learn to crochet?

10 years ago after having my second baby i was looking for something to do to keep my mind active and came across crochet.

I mainly used youtube to learn to crochet. at the time I didn't realize there was a difference between US and Uk terms. Even though I'm in the UK I taught myself US terms and continue to use them in all my patterns.

What made you decide to start designing patterns?

I've always has a creatve mind. Crochet gives me a chance to bring my ideas to life and i thought other people might like to make some of my ideas.

How would you say that your crochet designing has changed from when you started?

I orginally kept my designs pretty simple. I now add little details like eye lids or eye lashes as these really can make a difference to the finished item. they add character.

What’s your go-to yarn and crochet hook? Any particular reason why you prefer them?

2.5mm hook and yarn art jeans. This hook and yarn make lovely motifs for my African flower animals.

What are some of your favorite crochet techniques/stitches/ patterns?

African Flower Motifs are my favourite as they are so versitile and dont require lots of counting. perfect for family life when you are likely to get intrupted often.

Are you a one-project-at-a-time person, or do you have a lot of WIPs on the go?

1 project at a time, if i was to do more than 1I would forget what I had done or need to do.

What’s the process like when you design a crochet pattern? What are some words you would use to describe your patterns?

I generally have an idea in my head of what I want to design. its then a case of notebook, pen, hook and yarn and trial and error.

My patterns can be fairly long as I like to explain every step with pictures, as im a more visual learner. too many words and i get lost so I try to make my patterns step by step.

Tell us about your favorite make or biggest crochet triumph?

In African flowers my favorite design is pepper the horse head.

My Favorite wreath would be my Santa gnome.

Being asked to Design Elmer the elephant for simply crochet magazine would be my biggest triumph.

Paying it forward, who are some of your favorite crochet designers/ bloggers?

Cottontail and Whiskers, Bea has some crazy crochet skills. i love her designs.

Cute Crochet by Sarah B- also a designer of african flower animals, always exciting to see what shes made.
