Premier Just Yarn

For the past year or so I've been following Premier Yarns on FB and IG, plus getting newsletters via email. A while back I received an email about their new yarn "Just Yarn". They mentioned that it was worsted weight and a 14oz skein with lots of yardage.

Premier Just Yarn (100% Acrylic, 875 yards / 800 meters, 14 ounces / 400 grams) Colors: Goldenrod, Cream, Leaf, Gray & Garnet

Well..... they are right about the yardage. There is a lot on one skein. No - it's not worsted weight.... at least not in my opinion. Though I would compare it to "I Love This Yarn" which is also worsted weight. It's about the same thickness, at least some of the colors are the same thickness.

(Are yarn companies changing their labelling for thicknesses?)

I purchased these colors knowing I would be making a Christmas pattern for a "Christmas in July" Blog Hop. The red is the thickest color, it's almost worsted weight, but closer to aran weight. The goldenrod, gray (grey) & cream colors are aran weight. The green is dk weight. This is SO FRUSTRATING! The green section on the scarf is half an inch narrower than the red section. How are we supposed to make a striped project when the colors are different thicknesses?! Even a beanie pattern? If you make 4 beanies in different colors, the sizes won't work out since the green is so much thinner than the other colors. It's disappointing since I do have a hat pattern in my head and had hoped to use this yarn.

When I was about 1/2 way through the skein of green all of a sudden there was no twist to the yarn, basically crocheting with threads held together. It lasted for quite a while. Already had to watch for splitting, no twist made it even more difficult.

The yarn is quite soft though. It crochets well but you do have to watch for some splitting. You can unravel it many times with no issues. You could use it for a hat, scarf, mittens, slippers, shawl, blanket.... endless possibilities. Just don't try to do stripes....make your project in a solid color.

Would I buy this yarn again? Maybe. It would have to be a solid color blanket or shawl pattern. Can't use it for striped projects, or even a solid color beanie unless I would make all the sizes the same color.

I had high hopes that this yarn would replace the Bernat Premium I love to use (that is also not consistent with yarn thickness between the colors). Unfortunately my search is still on for that perfect all purpose yarn.

Here is a sneak peak at the scarf coming in July!

JUST FOR FUN!

While I was still in Texas I had yarn shipped home. Didn't realize how much I had ordered until I got home and had to unpack it all! Yikes! Won't have to buy yarn for the rest of the year. As I unpacked the yarn I took photos of everything.

I'm having trouble deciding what yarn to try next so why don't you help me!

Here are 4 options, comment below with the one you would like me to try and report on.

  1. Lion Brand Wool Ease

  2. Caron Baby Cakes

  3. Yarnsmith's PLAY Chunky

  4. Paintbox Yarns Chunky Pots

Ooooohhh I definitely vote on the Paintbox!! Those are some beautiful colors and I cannot wait to see how they play out, lol. But all of them are gorgeous!! Have a Great day Audrey and thank you for the awesome review. It is crazy how you can't trust the weights on yarns anymore. I used a 4 for a test for you but it was lighter than a couple of 3s I had, and I needed a 3. lol It worked for the job and was the right thickness, so I ignored the ball band and went with the "true weight" of the yarn. But when you are trying to mix colors, just ugh. The scarf is beautiful though!! Love…

Interesting read. I don’t have any of the yarn discussed nor the purchases for next use. Very frustrating for serious gaps in the weight within a brand across colors! I tend to shy away from worsted and chunkies as it’s just so hot most of the time here in my corner of AZ. I’ve. not used any of the 4 you are pondering to use next. Chunky pots looks interesting though.

It bugs me when yarn is not consistent. I like unplied cotton yarn for some projects, I don't wanna find it in the middle of my plied ball. I am drawn to the Play and Paintbox yarn.
